Spurs v Southampton: Time to End Saints Saga
The FA Cup may represent our only realistic chance of silverware but it’s certainly been clogging up our fixture list. It needed two games to get past Middlesbrough in the last round and a 1-1 draw at Southampton means that we face the Saints in another replay on Wednesday night.
The prize is a home tie against Norwich City in the fifth round but can we get the job done against a side who have already caused us enough problems this season?
This preview has been compiled shortly after the Manchester City win and we wait for confirmed team news from the club. It would appear that all of those who were involved in the game came through unscathed so we’re not expecting any new absentees for Wednesday night.
It’s also unlikely that anyone will return so we can expect Ben Davies, Harry Kane and Moussa Sissoko to sit it out. With new arrivals at his disposal, it will be interesting to see Jose’s starting XI and it appears there are no new alarms from Sunday.
We’re in the uncomfortable position of being red hot favourites for this game and, in the lead up to kick off, Spurs are out in front at odds of 7/10 with William Hill. The draw in normal time can be claimed at 3/1 with BetFred while a win for Southampton is out at best odds of 17/4 with SportingBet.
Remember, those are the prices for the 90 minute result and will exclude any extra time. As an alternative, you can take a look at the To Qualify market where Tottenham shorten to 7/19 with VBet while Southampton can be picked up at a top price of 5/2 with William Hill.
Few would be surprised if it takes extra time to settle the match. Heaven forbid there are penalties too as our shootout record isn’t great but we do feel that this will go beyond 90 minutes.
Other Side Bets
The bookmakers have been a little slow to confirm side bets in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s match but these markets will fill up in the lead up to kick off. For now, Betway dominate the early prices and they have Son Heung-Min as favourite to score the first goal at 15/4, followed by Lucas Moura and Dele Alli who can both be claimed at 17/4.
Danny Ings has been the biggest threat to Spurs from Southampton’s point of view and, having scored twice in the league against us, you can pick up the striker at best odds of 5/1 with Betway to open the scoring.
Erik Lamela is next at a top price of 8/1 with William Hill and Coral while other picks from either side include Giovani Lo Celso at a best of 17/2 with RedZone and SportNation, Shane Long at best odds of 11/1 with Betway and Serge Aurier at a top price of 33/1 with Ladbrokes.
Other side bets could include Both Teams to Score in 90 minutes which is quoted at best odds of 4/5 with William Hill and BetFred and that’s not a bad price for a market which rarely hits Even Money.
We are favouring the draw in normal time so, a Correct Score of 1-1 may be the one to follow at a top price of 27/4 with SportingBet and that would mean taking Under 2.5 Goals at Even Money with Coral.
If you disagree with those assessments, you could claim either side to win by one goal in the Winning Margin betting at a best of 6/4 with Betway. Remember, all of the side bets that we’ve mentioned here are for the result in 90 minutes and would exclude any extra time.
Wednesday night’s game will mark the third meeting between these two sides since New Year’s Day. With that in mind, we’re going to skip our usual dangerman and head to head sections and move straight on to the verdict.
The difference in winning and losing on Sunday came down to the simple fact that Spurs took their chances while Manchester City wasted theirs. That’s not been a common scenario for us so far in 2020 and it needs to continue as the season reaches a crucial stage. We suspect that we will come through this tie but a hesitant Tottenham may well return and make hard work of things.
Progression before the dreaded penalties is needed but a draw at the end of normal time is a likely outcome in our opinion. Both teams to score and a scoring appearance from Dele Alli, as opposed to his brother, will hopefully combine to make it a profitable evening.
- The Draw at the end of Normal Time at 3/1 with BetFred
- Dele Alli to score any time in 90 minutes at 6/4 with SportNation
- Both Teams to Score at 4/5 with William Hill
